Ducks

The ducks are driving me a bit crazy! 

We had 24 Saxony duck eggs in the incubator and only one hatched! And it wasn't even a pure Saxony! WTF?! It's a Muscovy cross. I did not know that the Muscovy were mating with the Saxony! that's a big no-no! Sneaky buggers!

Muscovy ducks are sort of half duck and half goose. they do not cross well with other ducks. no wonder we had horrible fertility and dismal hatch! damn ducks! Saxony are "threatened", we don't want the Muscovy messing up our secial purebred Saxons!

so, the little cutie in the pic is our one hatch. she's cute! She has a chick for a friend cause she was lonely. As a Muscovy/Saxony cross she will be infertile, so will be staying here as a pet.

The Saxony drakes are really pissing me off!This is the third Saxony lady they have injured during mating. Not cool! her eye is all swollen and it's bleeding around it. She's now on lock-down in the house. It will take a week or two to heal.  Not nice at all. We put a cage in the coop for the boys; starting tonight, they will be caged at night so they won't be hurting the girls anymore. All the injuries keep happening at night in the coop.

Mating season is sadly always rough on the girls, as the summer goes on, things will calm down a bit thankfully!
