Tire Greenhouses

I LOVE living in Nova Scotia; however, putting in a veggie garden can be rather challenging here as the growing season is a bit short. We can get frost well into June. Some plants need more time than the growing season here allows and I simply don't have enough room inside to start everyone early. this year, I decided to try making old tires into little greenhouses.

I dug up the earth under the tire so the plants roots should be able to easily expand into the ground and filled the tire with soil I purchased from the store. Then I simply stapled on some clear plastic. I stapled it on about 3/4 of the way around, so I could still lift it up to check the plants and water them.

It has worked fantastic! The black tire seem to attract the sun keeping the soil warm, while the plastic keeps the plants safe from frost at night.

My pumpkins and watermelons seem to be doing great! I just put a rock on the unstapled end at night to keep any frost out. The plastic also keeps my pesky chickens out!

I planted a bunch of my veggies in tires last year and found it worked great; it was pretty well maintenance free. I didn't have to weed them, so it sort of worked like a raised garden bed. It was also easier to protect from my trouble making poultry.

I was concerned that the plants could get contaminated by the chemicals in the tires, but after much google searching I was reassured that tires had to be burned to release toxins and using them for plants was perfectly safe :)

Using tires for mini greenhouses worked great, was extremely cheap and easy to do!

Hugs and love!

Chick Hatching

I made this video last week when the little incubator chick was hatching. It's a long video, 18 minutes long, and Youtube wouldn't post it till my account got verified (I got that done today!).

It took the chick about 90 minutes to fully hatch. The video consists of a pile of little videos I made during the process. If you haven't seen a chick hatch before, it's pretty cool to watch!

Chicks!

Good day friends! sorry I haven't blogged for over a week :( I've been super busy! So, here's a photo of the chick from my last video. she would be 14 days old now. she's cute :)

Unfortunately 4 days after she was born, mama chicken gave up on the eggs and deserted them :( bummer. However, it is perfectly normal. Mama chickens usually only wait 3 days on the nest after a chick is born, so 4 days is better than norm. I candled the remaining eggs and as it looked like there was still life in a couple, we quickly made a DIY incubator. Wasn't sure if it would work, but what did we have to lose?!

Four more days passed and I was about to give up and one of the eggs pipped! WOW! I was shocked, and happy, but hesitantly happy, as I wasn't sure if the chick would actually be strong enough to hatch.

24 hours after pipping, the chick zipped! Holy crap! I was shocked! she actually did it!

And here she is 3 days old! I gave her a stuffed animal and mirror as she was lonely.

I waited another two days and was about to throw out the rest of the eggs and bam! look what happened! Another egg pipped! The other eggs sadly were thrown out as they were not good.

It's been almost 24 hours and the chick hasn't started to zip. fingers crossed! i'll let you know if she makes it.

Snapping Turtle

Look who showed up in the yard near the house ... a snapping turtle. A darn big snapping turtle. A really grumpy snapping turtle!

I noticed a hoopla near the side of the house and found this big fella surrounded by quacking ducks. I actually had a snapping turtle for a summer back when I was a little girl, so I recognized what he was right away. I also knew right away, that he is a serious threat to my critters and needed to go! Snapping turtles can and do take the legs right off ducks! They can also eat ducklings. not something we want here. We have small red slider turtles at our ponds and the snapping turtle could of eaten them too!

So, i picked him up and put him in a box, and we carried him a couple of KM away and put him a one of the huge ponds well away from us.

I love turtles, but he can't stay here. He's now at a much bigger pond and will hopefully be safe and happy :)
