All About Chocolate!

Almost everyone loves chocolate; it is one of the favourite foods worldwide. However, many do not know much about it. Here are some interesting facts about chocolate!

- Dark chocolate is an excellent antioxidant. Antioxidants help to fight free radicals that cause disease. Eating small amounts of dark chocolate help to fight everything from aging to cancer to high blood pressure to asthma. However, this is not true about all chocolate, just dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cocoa the better. Look for chocolate that is at least 70 percent dark chocolate.

-Dark chocolate has more antioxidants than blueberries, green tea, red wine or even pomegranates.

- Milk chocolate is cocoa mixed with lecithin, vanilla, milk, sugar, cocoa butter and other assorted chemicals and preservatives. Sadly, it is not good for you at all.

- During production, chocolate absorbs lead. Fortunately, it is such a minuscule amount that there is no real concern of lead poisoning, unless it is eaten in pounds.

- Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to many animals, including dogs and cats.

- Eating a little chocolate helps to lift your mood and helps alleviate depression.

- By melting chocolate in your mouth, you increase both your brain activity and your heart rate more than you would from a passionate kiss.

- Chocolate does contain caffeine, yet it is far less than a cup of coffee or a can of pop.

- The word “chocolates” originally comes from either the Aztecan word 'cacahuatl' or ‘xocolatl’. It means “bitter water”.

- Chocolate comes from the cocoa bean which comes from the Theobroma Cacao tree. “Theobroma Cacao” means “food of the Gods” in Greek.

- Cocoa was once called cacao, but became cocoa due to the misspelling of the word.

- In the Ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures, it was believed that the cocoa bean came from Paradise and gave power and wisdom to those who ate it. The beans were so precious they were actually used as a type of currency.

- Due to the feel good properties in chocolate, it is considered an aphrodisiac.

- Chocolate does not actually cause acne. Improper diet and/or hormones cause acne.

- Americans love chocolate and consume almost half of the world's chocolate products each year. It is estimated that each American eats 12 pounds of chocolate per year.

- Chocolate is a good source of energy. Just one chocolate chip provides enough energy for an adult to walk 150 feet.

- Chocolate is high in fat. However, it does not raise cholesterol levels.

- Chocolate helps to alleviate PMS

- Cocoa is a good source of iron. Just one ounce of it has 10% of the daily recommended amount.

Chocolate is a delicious feel good food. However, its health benefits are only attainable through the eating of dark chocolate, cocoa nibs or other pure forms of cocoa. Enjoying it in moderation is also mandatory to profit from the health benefits. Sadly, milk chocolate, white chocolate and other chocolates that are low in coca, offer no real benefits and should only be eaten as an occasional treat. Therefore, the next time you need a boast in mood or energy, enjoy a small amount of dark chocolate guilt free. Not only does it taste good, it is also good for you!

Easy Online Money

If you are looking to earn a little extra money online, but don't want to take a professional writing job,you should check out Bubblews and Chatabout

Chatabout is simply answering questions. You earn points that you can redeem for a PayPal payment. The site is only good for making $5-$10 a week on,but they pay quick and it's easy

Chatabout

Bubblews has a much greater earning potential; you can easily earn $50 + a week. However, it takes a far amount of work and commitment to get going on. On Bubblews to need to write 400 character posts (about 100 words) and follow the rules carefully (or you won't be paid!) Bubblews pays through PayPal and they take about 3-5 days to pay you in eCheck. The key with working on Bubblews is being very active on the site and making lots of connections.

Bubblews

Neither of these sites will support you,but they may help pay some bills or give you some extra spending money. If you want to earn a full time living working online,I recommend getting jobs off freelance sites like Elance and People Per Hour.

Tree Tapping time

It is March and the weather is slowly starting to warm up. It's tree tapping time!

I'm a simple person and don't use a bunch of special stuff to tap my trees. All I use is a drill (To drill the hole in the tree), a tap and a clean 2L Coke bottle.

Once the bottle is full of sap, I simply empty it into another clean 2L bottle and store in a cool place until I have enough to boil it down to syrup.

The sap seems to be running great this year, so hopefully I'll get enough sap to make enough maple syrup to last a year!

The Weather is Warming Up

Perhaps winter is finally over!? It has been such a long hard winter, it feels like it is never going to end. I am so excited for the nice weather to get here. I plan on starting seedlings this weekend! Today it is +3 so I am hoping that we get some melting snow. I cannot even get in the barn due to all the snow. I really need some fresh hay for the hens. The Spring Equinox is only a couple of weeks away so I am praying we have grass by then. Doing Ritual and egg hunt outside in the snow rather sucks! Spring will be here soon, we just need to hold on a bit longer!

Ten Things Most City Dwellers Do Not Know About Chickens

1.Chickens are omnivores. They eat a variety of things from grains, corn, fruits and vegetable to yogurt, fish, bugs and even chicken! Meat is one of their favorite foods.

2.Chickens lay eggs naturally when they get 14 hours of light. They do NOT need a rooster or any type of hormones to lay. There is NO hormones in laying feed – it is unnecessary and illegal.

3.Chickens kept by commercial farmers usually have their beaks cut off so they can not hurt each other badly when they are crammed in to tight quarters together . Cutting their beaks causes them pain and can make it difficult for them to eat.

4.To get eggs during the winter, artificial lighting is used so the hens get 14 hours of light daily.

5.The colour of egg a chicken lays is based on the colour of their ear lobe. Generally red chicken lay brown eggs and white chickens lay white eggs, and there are chickens that lay pink eggs, blue eggs etc.

6.Due to their healthier life style and proper diet, chickens that have access to the outside, lay eggs that have more health benefits than hens stuck in a barn all day eating nothing, but laying feed do. Chickens that are allowed outside lay eggs with a orange yolk instead of a yellow yolk. Eggs from hens that are allowed to range outside during the day contain more vitamin A and E, more beta carotene, and more omega-3 fatty acids than eggs from caged hens do. They also contain less cholesterol and saturated fat

7.There is no difference between white eggs and brown eggs

8.When allowed to free range around a farm all day, chickens will return to the coop each night.

9.Chickens like to sleep on a perch

10.Chickens can easily be taught to come when called

Homemade Snickers Bars

A friend posted this recipe on Facebook. Sounds great!

You'll Need:
24 oz of Milk Chocolate Chips for coating the bars
1/2 stick butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1/4 cup condensed evaporated milk (this is canned milk, but NOT sweetened)
7 oz Marshmallow Creme ( marshmallow fluff)
14 oz caramel squares
1/3 cup peanut butter
14 oz of whole peanuts
4 tablespoons Water (for caramel)

Line a 9 x 13 dish with foil, "grease" with butter.

Melt about 1/2 a cup of Chocolate over a double boiler, once melted pour onto the buttered foil, spreading evenly with the back of a spoon. Place in fridge to set.

In the meantime...

In a med. saucepan combine sugar, butter, and evaporated milk, stirring constantly over med heat until mixture thickens and comes to a rolling boil, cook 4 minutes., stirring constantly Remove from heat and add peanut butter and marshmallow creme.

Pour the mixture over the chocolate & stick it in the fridge to solidify quickly.
Heat the caramel in the microwave or a double boiler with a few tablespoons of water ( about 4) until smooth and creamy.

Then add peanuts and mix.

Pour the caramel mixture over marshmallow layer and spread well until evenly coated over the nougat.

Cool a few minutes to let them set, then cut into bars.

Melt the 24 oz of Chocolate in a double boiler & Dip the bars into the chocolate, let them set on parchment or wax paper until hardened. You can speed the process up by placing them in the fridge for a few minutes.

Weather Warm Up

I'm super happy that the weather is warming up this week! I am soooooo sick of winter! The poor hens have been stuck in the garage 3/4 of this winter. Poor sweethearts

Hopefully tomorrow the ladies will be able to get out and get some exercise and fresh air. They must be bored silly spending their days stuck in the garage.

With the weather warm up I should be able to start tapping the maple trees this week. I'm excited to make some real maple syrup again! Tree tapping begins when the day time temps rise above zero, but still drop below zero. Trees make more sap when it's super cold, so it should be an awesome sap run this year. Once I get the taps up, I'll take some pics for you all.

A Sad Night

Unfortunately, Laverne, my sick Orpington hen, passed away last night.

She continued to weaken as the evening went on and around 10pm, she went into death spasms and died with blood coming up her eyes, nose and mouth. It was horrible and heart breaking.

I went on the Backyard Chicken forum to ask if anyone knew what happened, as my online research could not find a chicken disease that matched her symptoms, and everyone there feels that she had gotten poisoned somehow.

I'm not sure what she ate that poisoned her. I'll be searching the garage, basement and outside today for some clues. I will also be researching what to do encase it ever happens again. (When a dog eats something poison, there are things you can give them )

I'm so sorry for Laverne. I wish I could of done better at helping her.

It's a tough day for me, my heart hurts. I feel like I've failed and it's cost a life. It's tough.

I've seen more animal death in my three years in the country than I have my entire life before moving here. I'm a bit of a crappy farmer, it hurts my heart a lot when i lose an animal. they are not livestock to me, they are beloved pets.

The wheel turns.

Sick Hen

Today when I went out to check the hens and give them fresh water and food, I noticed Laverne, one of the Orpingtons wasn't acting normal. She seemed very lethargic and not her normal ornery self.

I picked her up and brought her inside, but she wouldn't eat any of the special treats I tried to give her. She did drink a little water.

She seems very blah and her one eye seems to be having a hard time opening. There are no wounds anywhere on her.

I checked to make sure she wasn't egg bound and I can't see anything outwardly wrong with her.

I hope she is going to be ok. I'm very worried about her.

Hopefully, she is just felling a little blue due to the long winter.

I gave her some colloidal silver encase it is an inside problem.

Laverne is the sable coloured hen in the photos.

Nicer Weather

I'm sorry I haven't blogged for awhile! I've been super busy working on art :)

This winter has been crazy cold and we've hit some record low temperatures. All my fur and feather babies are doing alright, but they are all a little under exercised and stir crazy.

Today, the weather warmed up enough for everyone to get outside for awhile. The hens had a nice time running around getting into trouble

Hens can get frostbite, especially hens with crops, so care needs to be taken that they are not left outside too long in really cold weather. I have found if it is colder than -10 out that I'm best to leave them locked in the garage all day. I always feel mean making them stay inside, but safety first.

Spring will be here soon and my ladies will get to go back to free ranging all day :)

Tiny Egg

Four (out of the 7 laid) eggs from the laying box today ... what's with the tiny tiny egg on the end? It's ridiculous! I have no idea who laid it. The one beside the tiny egg came from Baron, the green/grey one came from either Laverne or Shirley (Orpington's lay green/grey eggs) and the big one on the end, that's Poppy's of course. You'd almost think some strange bird came in to the garage and laid an egg in the laying box. It's way too small, too dark and speckled! How strange!

In chicken circles, they are called "fart eggs" "fairy eggs" or "Witch eggs".

They often have no yolk or can be entirely yolk.

They are sometimes caused by a disturbance in laying patterns, shortage of water or simply

because hens are weird

I haven't cracked the egg yet, so not sure what's inside. I'll let you know!
